Bulgaria, debts, blabla.

In the end the situation is much worse than what we thought.

In Bulgaria there is corruption (like in many other countries), and the company for heating (which is general, pro building, with individual counters for each radiator that have to be regularly checked) was most probably not selected for providing the best service for people. But other interests.

Even if the police sealed the door of the apartment where my father died, even if I have witnesses (like neighbors) that can confirm it was sealed 3 years ago, and it remained sealed until now... Even if the police itself can confirm that they sealed it with a document...

The company still wants over 13.000 € from heating, even if no fucking body used part of it (and was never wasted). Why? Because if no technician from their shitty company could visit the apartment to make the regular control every year, they automatically assume and count as if every radiator was constantly set on max.

Our lawyer said that we could sue them, but the costs would be so high, that even if we win, we would waste a lot of time and money anyway.

The ~ 13.000 € are the core of the problem, but totally, for now, I have 17.000 € less in my bank account because of all this mess. My lawyer alone costed 1.000 € (for now). And this without taking into account the plane ticket and the rest of the costs when travelling to Sofia.

My father's apartment is in terrible conditions. He had throat cancer and his last years were definitely a torture. There was garbage, dirt and a bunch of bottles from alcoholic beverages everywhere. While I didn't have any contact with him and don't suffer any deep emotional consequences from his death, I am glad that his suffering ended. Healthcare in Bulgaria isn't the best either. Also, as I said above, only a part of those 13.000 € aren't justified, because he actually had debts from heating before he died as well (he couldn't work the last years, obviously).

In any case, if I want to rent or sell the apartment where he died, I would have to invest some more thousands of euros to leave it in decent conditions.

What about the other apartment... Well, it seems there are barely any costs to pay, because it was occupied by the last tenants. The problem is that the assholes didn't pay a single cent of the rent itself ever since my father died, and of fucking course they didn't want to pay shit to me either. They basically just paid what was necessary to not get disturbed by any company... And no, they weren't poor by the standards in Bulgaria.

I had no patience left at that point and we kicked their asses from the apartment (this alone is a long story itself, where even the police got involved and me being pissed enough to almost break one guy's face, but it's not worth it). The thing is still that, unless I sue them, I won't see a single euro from them.

There is also a credit... One of the apartments wasn't exclusively his. A niece had a portion of his father's (my biological grandfather) inheritance, so he had to pay her a significant amount of money as well to keep the apartment for himself..., which is why he needed a credit of roughly 5.000 €. And of fucking course he died with a big portion of this credit still to be paid back (by me).

Why didn't I refuse the inheritance... Because my lawyer and others kept saying that despite all these issues, the benefits are higher and I could always rent/sell the apartments for more than all these costs. It will just take time, resources and stress to finally see some money going in the other direction...

There is more, but this is enough as summary.

It isn't over yet, as there are still many things to do. But this time maybe only my mother and the lawyer will solve the rest (in February ~), since I left power of attorney to represent me. The main problem is that we work on an inheritance by description (whatever the fuck is called in English), which takes some time. This type of inheritance implies that everything will be officially defined in front of a judge (benefits and debts). This way no company/anybody will be able to look for me in some years demanding any old forgotten debts that my father (or anybody from his family) had and I wasn't aware of.
